We are often asked how we find time to meditate. Our answer is simple: It is the most important thing we do, and when something is a priority, you make time for it no matter how busy your life.
OK – we admit that sometimes life does get in the way, but we do know that even the busiest day will be so much better if we make time to breathe. Is it always a 20-minute meditation, the time science tells us changes patterns of behavior? No. But most days we hit that 20 minutes because it calms us down, makes us more focused, and creates a resilience that helps us rebound from even life’s toughest challenges.
But sometimes it might be a minute of breathing here, 10 minutes of breathing there – just enough to make us pause and connect to our life force, our breath.
So why meditate?
Because it makes us feel good. As soon as we start breathing with our eyes closed:
• We notice the tightness in our shoulders, around our jaws and eyes and in our chests begin to leave our body.
• Our body begins to respond and we can literally feel the stress drift away.
• As we notice our thoughts without judgment, we begin to show compassion and love to ourselves, and start quieting the obnoxious roommate that often controls our thoughts.
• By the end of the practice, our body has softened and we are ready to face life.
Meditation allows us to step outside of ourselves and become an observer. We understand that we don’t have to control our thoughts, we just have to stop letting them control us. We no longer give our hurtful thoughts any power over us.
And this is why we find the time to meditate daily. It makes us thrive.
